Will Rutledge offers a sneak peak of the new Cowboys Stadium

Sports Illustrated gave me a last minute call to set up some remotes for the opening of the new Cowboys Stadium and I didn’t hesitate to jump in a car and head over there. I didn’t get an opportunity to work the game and whereas that would have been an amazing atmosphere to shoot in… I really don’t envy the guys that will be working. It is going to be crazy, loud, and chaotic. (and a ton o fun!!!)

The remotes are overall shots of the stadium and field and should be cool for tomorrows game. I got to be one of the first guys for Sports Illustrated to get up in the catwalk and check out the video board close up and it is a fantastic. (Personal note: Jerry Jones, you sir… are an entertainer and know how to put on a show.) Now, onto the catwalk… you CANNOT even remotely be afraid of heights if you want to go up there. After conquering a titanic set of stairs you must scale a metal grate walkway that has to be at a 40 degree incline…(see last photo in slideshow) and repeat multiple times while lugging equipment. haha.. I got dizzy…

Enough talk.. I hope you enjoy the Iphone photos of the new stadium…

Farewell to cowboy stadium

Goodbye Cowboy stadium… I will miss you…

(sorry it took so long to get this post up… i usually log in and then get caught up reading a friends posts while she is in Korea and then I lose interest in typing b/c she is so poetic and it makes me feel like a first grader when I write… but she hasn’t posted in four days and that broke the spell and I can type again…. although I still think I type like a first grader… and…. that’s why I am a photographer… hehehe)

I was fortunate to be allowed to participate in (potentially) the last Dallas Cowboy game in Texas Stadium. They are going to tear it down and move to the new stadium next year and it was fun getting to have have one last experience here. My father and I used to watch the games when I was little. We were there for the one win season as well as the super bowls… Sports Illustrated gave me an opportunity to work the games and I have been fortunate to cover events since 2002. Don’t get me wrong, the new stadium is beautiful but there is a history here for so many people that it will be hard to have to watch them implode it to build a mall or condos or whatever.

So Texas Stadium, in the immortal words of the recorded U.T voice when you finished registering classes…
“good bye and good luck”

Will Rutledge goes to DISNEYWORLD

Woohoo!!! Old Spice basketball tournament time.

So I cut short the vacation time with the family to drive back to Dallas to catch a flight to Orlando to work a basketball tournament for Sports Illustrated. I now know the best time to fly anywhere is right after Thanksgiving. There were a few people in the airport but not much.

Travel tip- Check your bags at the skycap station. You get charged two dollars (plus a tip) to not stand in a line and have someone carry your bags to the plane. What a wonderful concept, please use it…

The trip to Orlando was painless and I got to sit next to an extremely attractive woman. Normally I throw on the ipod and fall asleep, but this time I thought I would be sociable. We had a great conversation about diabetic insulin pumps. I learned a few things for sure. She did wait until we were about to land to inform me of topics that include a 10 yr old daughter, two ex husbands and current boyfriend in Orlando. Still a great conversation but funny how people do that.

We will cut the work stuff short… Worked two games back to back. Both games were blowouts and not as interesting as I had hoepd.

BUT… I had a pina colida with Minny Mouse when I got back to my DisneyWorld Marriott that night… that was an interesting evening… I also have a balcony in my Marriott room which is a first and i get to watch the sunset…

this is going to be a great trip… (excluding the four games I will have to work back to back tomorrow) hehehe

SI- Photos from the Cowboys/Eagles game

So… umm these are taken from the Iphone at night… I have come to the conclusion that I won’t be selling all of my canon gear and becoming an exclusive Iphone camera user…

Allow me to make introductions… This is Peter Read Miller and around him are those pesky yet wonderful Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders… I have to say I smiled every time I got hit with the pom-poms… The game was amazing too. It lived up to all of the hype.
The NFL made a deal with Canon to “sponsor” the photographers that shoot the games. The front side has a Canon logo/ backside NFL logo. I didn’t particularly care for them last year because they were made of a dense material and it got hot…realll hot. But the new ones this year are cool. Light weight, better designed, and comfortable. Thank you Canon… not that my opinion really matters I guess… but thank you. Side note- I laugh when the Nikon photographers complain about having a Canon logo on them when they shoot… hehehe… I guess there are added benefits to shooting with and loving Canon gear.

Sports Illustrated- Cowboys vs. Eagles

It’s that time of year… I am getting ready to head over to Irving Stadium to work the first game of the last year of Cowboys stadium… The game should be incredible… last year’s game was great and this one should hold the same drama. What a great game to shoot. On top of that… Peter Read Miller is coming into town to shoot it and he is an amazing photographer. I love working with him. I am also looking forward to the amusing game of “hit the silly photographer with my pom-poms” played by the cheerleaders… Those girls… I swear… they kick you and then giggle about it with the other cheerleaders… I think it is discussed in the locker room which photographers they like and which ones they don’t and then punish the ones they don’t… (It will be a long season for me if I don’t make a good impression early on…) I wish I could smuggle flowers in or something…

Side note… I went out on Saturday in Dallas with a friend and we met a couple of nice ladies who tried to get us in this ridiculous dance club… and I got the VIP rope slammed down in my face… What a shot to the ego… I am now labeled “not one of the cool kids” WEAK… I knew I was a nerd, but I thought I was a cool nerd…

It probably didn’t help my case that I had flip-flops on but that’s how I roll… I think you are even cooler if you can be a badass and wear flip-flops out on a Saturday night… (I might be wrong on this one but I am not dressing up to hit $15 drink night at a stupid club…)

So my friend went in and I ventured on another bar and met some people and had fun… thankfully that bar accepted my flip-flops and winning smile…
